Heritage Tour

From ancient times Sri Lanka has had a host of civilizations and cultures, from kingdoms dating back 2,500 years to the Portuguese, Dutch and British colonial eras.  Our tour starts with the historic trading centers of Negombo and Kalpitiya and moves on to Sri Lanka’s famous Cultural Triangle in the north-central part of the island.
We start in Negombo, rich in heritage with its Portuguese churches and Dutch canal, and head for the Kalpitiya peninsula, one of the most beautiful and unspoilt parts of Sri lanka. Kalpitiya was a trading hub for the Portuguese who christened it “the island of Cardiva”.

Our tour leads on to the historic Cultural Triangle which includes a wealth of heritage and history. The points of the Triangle are the cities of Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa and Kandy, and within lies famous Sigiriya rock and the cave temples of Dambulla. These are among seven UNESCO world heritage sites in the area. Our tour includes Anuradhapura and nearby Mihintale where Buddhism was introduced to Sri Lanka. We visit Sri Lanka’s ancient capital city, Polonnaruwa, with its fascinating remnants of an ancient civilization and the beautiful carved Buddhist statues of Gal Vihara. Sigiriya rock, with its frescoes and former palace, is a highlight of many visits to Sri Lanka. To the south lies romantic Kandy, the last Royal kingdom to resist the British and site of the famous Temple of the Tooth, a place of pilgrimage for Buddhists.

Day 1 Kalpitiya
Negombo> Chilaw > Palavi to Kalpitiya

Leaving the churches and canals of Negombo we ride north up the coast to beautiful Kalpitiya, one of the newly-discovered tourist areas of Sri Lanka. Situated 140km north of Negombo, the Kalpitiya peninsula sits between Puttalam lagoon and the Indian Ocean. It is a marine sanctuary with a diversity of habitats including bar reefs, flat coastal plains, saltpans, mangrove swamps, salt marshes and vast sand dune beaches. It was a famous trading hub from the Portuguese era. We spend the night in Kalpitiya

Day 2 Anuradhapura
Kalpitiya > Palavi > Puttlam > Anuradhapura Ancient City

After a traditional Sri Lankan breakfast we ride south and inland to Anuradhapura, the first established kingdom in ancient Sri Lanka. Founded by King Pandukabhaya in 377 BC, Anuradhapura has a wealth of historic and Buddhist sites including giant brick dagobas, ancient palaces, huge lakes and sacred Bo Tree. Riding south-east we encounter the carved stone Aukana Buddha statue – the tallest ancient Buddha statue in Sri Lanka. We spend the Night at Anuradhapura Ancient City.

Day 3 Polonnaruwa
Anuradhapura > Ritigala Elephant Transit Home > Sigiriya > Polonnaruwa

Stretching over rolling grassland, Polonnaruwa’s ruined palaces and dagobas provide a fascinating insight into a past reign of glory. Dating to the 11thcentury, Polonnaruwa replaced Anuradhapura as Sri Lanka’s ruling city after a devastating invasion by invaders from south India. It reached its height in the 12th century. The most famous of Polonnaruwa’s rulers, King Parakramabahu1, created the vast Parakrama Samudra (Sea of Parakrama) which remains one of the finest examples of Sri Lanka’s skill at water management. We stay over night at Polonnaruwa Ancient city

Day 4 Kandy
Polonnaruwa > BakaMoona > Knuckles Mountain Range > Matale > Kandy

Riding south we pass through the mysterious Knuckles mountain range before arriving for the night in the city of Kandy. The second-largest city in Sri Lanka after Colombo, Kandy is famous for its Royal Botanical Gardens and the Temple of the Tooth. Situated in a beautiful highland region of tea plantations, Kandy was capital city of the last remaining independent kingdom of Sri Lanka after the coastal regions were conquered by the Portuguese, Dutch and British respectively. It was capital city from 1592 until 1815 when it at last capitulated to the British. The famous Royal Botanical Gardens were Lord Mountbatten’s headquarters during the Second World War

Day 5 Negombo . Kandy > Alawwa > Negombo
